SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION:

Under direction of Foundation Supervisor, the Instructional Specialist is responsible for working with central services and school based staff, industry and postsecondary stakeholders to support career and technical education (CTE) programs, specifically those associated with the development and implementation of hospitality, tourism, and restaurant management programs that are aligned with local, state, and national industry standards for certification programs. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to move materials/equipment weighing up to 100 pounds as required by the Foundation program. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Some weekend and evening meetings, events, and field trips may be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Understands the benefits and structure of CTE programs and related curriculum, in addition to the related MCPS policies and regulations. Understands the mission of the Foundation for Hospitality and Restaurant Management (FHRM). Possesses knowledge of the concepts, strategies, and best practices in the development and implementation of CTE and Foundation programs. Comprehends school and classroom organization in order to meet the needs of a wide range of learners to provide 21st century skills. Has the ability to work and communicate with business partners, MCPS administration, school-based staff, and all stakeholders. Exhibits an understanding of College and Career Readiness programs and the development of articulation agreements with post-secondary institutions and business partnerships. Demonstrates excellent planning, organizational, management, and oral and written communication skills. Prioritizes and manages several tasks simultaneously. Possesses thorough knowledge of the various aspects of business and marketing, consumer service principles, tourism and travel geography, lodging management, and the food service industry.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

Master?s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college. At least five years of successful secondary teaching. Industry experience or experience in hospitality, tourism, restaurant management, or related consumer service areas that support the Hospitality and Restaurant Management Foundation preferred. Successful completion of Observing and Analyzing Teaching I (OAT) preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland state certification requirements for an Advanced Professional Certificate in Secondary Education and has the ability to gain industry certifications in their specialized industry area(s).
